The speech at the solemn meeting devoted to the 65 anniversary of the Victory, the Lagerny garden, on May, 9th
Dear our veterans of the Great Patriotic War, the widow of participants of war, workers of the home front!
Inhabitants of the Tomsk region!
The further in history the May of 1945, the more important for us becomes the value of that great Victory which was obtained by the Soviet people 65 years ago. We hurry up to do honour to the veterans of the Great Patriotic War, which, unfortunately, are less and less numerous every year. You see, how few of them have come today here. Some of veterans, on this sacred day for them, stayed at home because of their state of health. But, as usually, Gennady Nikolaevich Voroshilov, our last hero has come here on May, 9th. The hero of the Soviet Union living in the Tomsk region. I want to wish him and all our veterans, long years of life, but, unfortunately, I understand that the time is relentless. Every year, and actually, every day their quantity dwindles. The bigger becomes our debt to them. I will tell more, our debt to them is irredeemable.
130 thousand of Tomsk citizens fought with the enemy on all fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Every second soldier did not come back.
100 thousand wounded fighters have been put back on feet in Tomsk hospitals.
Every third inhabitant of Tomsk was evacuated those years, but all Muscovites and Leningrad citizens have been sheltered and have been warmed by native Tomskovites, and they all together worked for the front, for the Victory.
At the evacuated factories 14-15-years old boys and little girls carried out 10 norms per day. In the Tomsk region during years of war the volumes of output have grown by 300 %! And, of course, such break was impossible without our scientists who the first in the country have created «Committee of scientists to help the front» and solved the most difficult industrial, rationalisation problems on placing and the organisation of the evacuated manufactures.
The great Victory continues to connect all Russian people: the mutual losses and the mutual memory. It is invisibly stretched through borders in the countries where live or lived our veterans where there are monuments to our soldiers liberators. The victory reconciles us: the most different political parties and social movements which usually argue to hoarseness, today agree to propose together the first toast «To the Victory»!
The victory looks ahead, because today here, near to the veterans - our youth. They never saw relatives, lost in the war. For them they are already legendary, almost epic heroes. But communication of generations in Russia has not interrupted. The victory continues to live in the hearts of young people, leads our children, grandsons, and great-grandsons of winners to the memorials, it directs search groups to the places of fights where lie heroes which names and feats are unknown till now. The victory leads volunteers, youth movements in the houses of veterans to help them. I do not say that it forces us, the officials to do such things that veterans could feel them better, more comfortably, more cheerfully.
The victory has made our country great, and we will remain the great country if we remember the Victory.
I congratulate all inhabitants of the Tomsk region on a great holiday of the Victory!
